Library Take-out Service
Students registered in the Winter semester can use the library take-out service provided all outstanding materials have been returned and have no fines of $10 or more.
Search the library catalogue and submit as many requests as you would like, then follow the steps we've outlined to collect them at the selected campus library. When your items are ready to be picked up a confirmation will be sent to your Douglas College email.
1. Visit the library with your college or government picture ID during library pickup hours.
2. Ring the doorbell to notify library staff when you arrive at the library entrance
3. Show your ID to library staff through the glass doors.
4. Please bring your own bags.
5. Observe physical distancing practices when picking up your requests.
6. Refrain from using the pick-up service if you or any member of your household is unwell.
7. Contact the library if you need to extend the pick-up period or have any other questions.
8. Loan periods for books is two weeks and will automatically renew two days before the due date for another two weeks, if no one else has requested the item, until the end of the semester. Books and DVDs can be returned to the external book drops at either campus library.

The library continues to remain closed to all users at this time so this take-out service does not include entry into the library itself. Please refer to the College's health and safety guidelines if you're considering attending either campus.
To help our patrons during these stressful COVID-19 times, the Library has enabled automatic renewals effective immediately. All eligible items such as books and DVDs will be automatically renewed two days before their due date. The new due date will be extended from the original date, adding another two weeks each time, until the end of the semester or someone requests the item.
Some items may not renew if:
- The item does not allow renewals, such as equipment
- The item has been requested by someone else
- The item has reached its renewal limit, ie, the end of the semester
- Your borrowing privileges have been suspended due to an excess of $10 in fines. If you're not sure if that applies to you, check your library account.
On the day of the renewal you'll receive a courtesy email letting you know if it was successful or if you need to return the borrowed items within the next two days. Please pay attention to the due dates in the emails or you can always check them in your library account.

Books can be returned 24/7 to either campus library but equipment must be returned to the campus from which it was borrowed.
When the Library is closed outside of our regular take-out hours, contact a guard at the Security booth and they will arrange to open the front door so you can leave your media equipment securely in the foyer. Please do not return equipment through the external book drops or leave it unattended.

Library users who have long overdue materials from the previous semester will have their name submitted to a collection agency by the Finance Office. If you have questions or concerns about the status of your library account, email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.

Fines are charged to encourage borrowers to return material on time. There are a limited number of materials which must be shared by a wide range of users and many reserve materials are required for course use. Fines can be paid online while the library remains closed, make sure to include a note that it's a library fine. * Library privileges will be suspended when a borrower owes $10.00 or more.

These fees may seem high but, in fact, they do not truly reflect the cost to the Library of purchasing another copy and processing it so that it can go back on the shelves. Many valuable books are no longer in print. The Library would prefer to get all materials back, rather than try to replace them.
A full refund, minus a processing fee, will be given for items that are later recovered. As a general practice, no refunds will be issued to patrons after the two-year period, however, at the discretion of the Collections Librarian, refunds may be granted. No refunds are provided on lost and found high demand items.
Items instructors would like the class to read for their course are sometimes placed on short term loan at the front desk of the library. However, during these COVID times, all course reserves have been amalgamated into the general collection and are availble for students to request.
Faculty, if you are looking for electronic versions of journals or textbooks or require a digitial scan of a physcial item, such as a chapter in a book, we can help you with your course syllabus.
Due to COVID-19 our ability to fill requests depends on the interlibrary loan (ILL) service other libraries are able to provide. We will try our best to fill book, article, and DVD/Blu-ray requests, but it may take longer to obtain materials than usual.
Articles will be delivered to you digitally and physical items will be available for pick-up using the Library Takeout service. All physical ILL materials will be available for a two week loan. If you need it longer, please contact email@example.com to request a renewal.
If you have physical ILL items you can return them to the New Westminster or Coquitlam campus libraries.
To borrow books and pick them up from your campus of choice, search the library catalogue and place a request on the items you'd like. However, if you're looking for a copy of one of our print articles, please fill out this form with all the necessary information, and we will provide you with a digital copy.
Borrowing In-Person at Other Universities and Colleges
Reciprocal borrowing between member institutions is temporarily suspended.
Who May Borrow:
Douglas College students and employees may borrow materials from participating institutions, though reciprocal borrowing privileges are not extended to alumni or extramural borrowers.
You must present a current Douglas College photo identification card when you apply to receive a library card with one of our reciprocal borrowing institutions. A COPPUL card is not required at these institutions. Restrictions to borrowing may exist.
Responsibilities and Fines:
Library patrons are held accountable for all materials borrowed through the Reciprocal Borrowing agreement. It is the responsibility of the patrons to be familiar with and adhere to the lending policies of each library from which they borrow materials.
Any overdue fines and replacement costs for lost or damaged books will be charged to the patron by the lending library.

The Douglas College Alumni card enables those who have graduated from Douglas College with a degree or diploma to borrow books at the Library. Videos, DVDs, Blu-rays and equipment are not available for borrowing, but Alumni are free use these materials within the library. Cards are not being produced by Alumni Relations at the moment so please email us to set up a new library record or update an already established one.
Members of the general public may obtain a Community Borrower's card for a fee of $25 per year (accepted in cash only). The card is valid for one year from the date issued and can be used at both campus locations. When applying, photo identification and proof of current address are required. The Community Borrower fee of $25 is waived for anyone over the age of 65. In order to obtain a library card, Community Borrowers under the age of 18 must provide a responsibility_form.pdf signed by their legal guardian. A copy of the form can also be obtained at the front counter.
Reciprocal and Community Borrowers are limited to a maximum of five books in total. Videos and DVDs may be used in the Library only.

Preferred searches allow you to store a search you regularly like to do in your personal library record. This can be useful in several ways:
- To receive email alerts of new items on a topic that interests you.
- To keep track of a particularly complex search that you might want to use again.
- To store a search that you will run on a regular basis.
How do I do a preferred search?
Log into your library account, click on the 'New Search' link on top of the page and enter your search terms. You can use the drop down menus to select the search type (keywords, title, etc.) and/or collection (books, videos, etc.) For example, you may wish to search for items on the Subject: Women in literature -- Great Britain -- History -- 19th century. Or you could perform a keyword search such as: (juvenile or youth or teen*) and (drug* or substance or alcohol*).
To save this search, click on the long 'Save as preferred search' button on the right side of the page. To view your list of saved searches, click the 'Return to your record' button at the top of the screen then 'Preferred Searches' on the left hand side of the page.
How do I receive email alerts of new items?
After you have saved a search, return to your library account and click on 'Preferred Search' on the left side of the screen. Tick the box labelled 'Mark for E-mail' next to the search in question. Click 'Update list' to save the change. You'll receive an email notice of new additions to the library with your chosen preferred searches at the start of each week.
Notices by Email
By default, the Library will send users email notifications to their student Office 365 email or employee Outlook accounts. If Office 365 is is not your primary email account you can login, change the email settings, and have your College mail forwarded to one you use more frequently.
Library notices can include
- items you placed on hold that are ready for pickup
- information about holds that are unable to be filled
- courtesy reminder of materials that will be due soon
- overdue materials or fines
- reminder of the last day to return Library materials (i.e. last day of the semester)
Notices by Text
Subscribe to notifications by text message and you'll start receiving brief texts, in addition to your regular Office 365 emails, within two days. Your phone number will be used for library purposes only.
The first notices of the day are sent at 7 am. The length of the notice depends on your phone model and mobile operator and should be no more than 1-2 text messages.
While there is no charge from the library for this service, you may see a charge for incoming text messages at the standard rate applied by your mobile phone carrier, depending on your plan or package.
