Playing video and streaming media
Playing and copying videos, films and streaming media
- Use legally acquired or posted streaming videos, films and media for educational purposes.
- Check out the Douglas College library's streaming video collection for material to support your instruction.
Streaming video cannot be copied or downloaded and stored in Blackboard or any other course management site without permission from the copyright holder as per Article 29.5 the Copyright Act.
Please note: Personal "on demand" subscriptions (iTunes, Amazon Prime, Netflix, etc.) cannot be screened in class due to licensing restrictions. If the terms of the agreement state that use is limited to “personal” or “household”, then classroom use is not permitted.
Consider the following questions before using an online video in class:
- Was the video posted online by the copyright owner?
For example, you cannot show a PBS documentary, posted on YouTube by someone called EnthusiasticFan000345.
- Does the site’s Terms of Use allow you to stream their videos for educational use?
This should be explicitly stated if it is not a streaming site available through Douglas College Library.
- Does the video contain uncredited, copyrighted information from another source (for example, music, pictures, or charts)?
- Is the video allowed to be shown in Canada? (there will be a message if it is not).
Links to streaming videos can be included on Blackboard course pages, in email messages, or Word documents; on PowerPoint slides and on web pages. Our Permalinks Guide provides detailed instructions on how to create a permalink for most of our streaming platforms.
