In 2009, Douglas College Library began collecting zines, and has been working since then with faculty in several disciplines to incorporate this unique resource into teaching and learning. Fifteen years later, zine momentum is picking up speed and we’re excited to share just a bit of what’s been going on and what’s to come!
What's Been Happening
- In April 2024, library employees and Douglas College Library Zine Collective (DCLZC) members Christine Fojas, Lindsay Russell, and Katharine Shipley presented a workshop titled Join the Zine Scene: Exploring Library Values Through Collaborative Zine Making at the BC Library Association Conference.
- In May 2024, Alicia Arding and Christine Fojas attended WILU 2024 (Workshop for Instruction in Library Use Conference) to share a presentation on Using Zines in Library Instruction.
- Big improvements to accessing the zine collections at both campus libraries are now underway. A project to catalogue zines is expected to be completed in July, which will make zines searchable in the library catalogue. They also may be borrowed similar to other library materials.
- Douglas was recently included in the Vancouver Art Gallery’s Vancouver Zine Guide. An exhibit titled Copy Machine Manifestos: Artists Who Make Zines is running at the Vancouver Art Gallery until September 22, 2024, and print copies of their Vancouver Zine Guide can be found on site when visiting.
