Your library card

The Douglas College identification card is also your library card. Contact Employee Relations at local 5440 if an ID card is needed.

Borrowing library material

  • Loan Periods: Books are on loan for two weeks. See detailed loan information.
  • Renewals: Renew books online, in-person, or by telephone at 604-527-5568 (NW) or 604-777-6130 (COQ) or in-person.
  • Advance Renewals: Materials may be renewed up to two days in advance if there are no holds on the item.
  • Reference Books: These may be borrowed on short term loan by faculty.

End of semester returns

  • Due dates: All library materials are due by the last day of the semester. If you'd like to keep your items over the semester break, please bring them all back to the library so we can update your library record and re-issue your books.
  • Overdue items: Items not returned are considered lost and borrowers are billed. If materials are not returned or paid for within a semester period, the borrower's library privileges are revoked and they are not able to borrow books and equipment from the library until they are returned.

Interlibrary loan

Students and employees may borrow books and periodical articles from university, college and selected public and special libraries in British Columbia and across Canada. Materials are generally delivered to your campus within 8-14 days.

  • Interlibrary loan form: Fill out this online form to request a book or article from another library.
  • Items in the Douglas College Library collection: Books or articles available at Douglas College cannot be requested through interlibrary loan. Periodical databases on the Electronic Library Network provide a service called GODOT that allows you to request your interlibrary loan directly from the lending library while in the database. If using this option, only articles that are not available in our collection may be requested.
  • Videos: Some video titles may be available on interlibrary loan through the Media Exchange Cooperative. Email lib_media@douglascollege.ca for more information.
  • In-person borrowing at other institutions: If carrying out research projects requiring extensive interlibrary loans, you are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the in-person borrowing privileges extended to all employees by other BC colleges and universities. There is no cost to employees and students for interlibrary loans. However, Douglas College Library pays a minimum of $5.00 for each item requested.
  • Fines: Borrowers with overdue interlibrary loan material will be charged overdue fines. Total fines accrued may equal, but will not surpass, the replacement cost of the material. Replacement fees for overdue, lost or damaged material will also be charged.

Using university and college libraries

Douglas College faculty are eligible to obtain library cards at no cost from Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia. When requesting cards at these institutions, please ensure that you take your Douglas College library card and a letter from your department indicating that you are currently working as faculty at the College. Douglas College Library also has reciprocal borrowing agreements with a number of post-secondary institutions in the Lower Mainland.
